David Gavrilescu became the youngest grandmaster in the history of Romanian chess

The good news continues for our partners at the Romanian Chess Federation. David Gavrilescu became the 22nd Grand Master of Romania after placing 2nd in the Miercurea Ciuc stage of the Grand Prix Romania.

At only 19 years and 4 months, David Gavrilescu surpasses any record and enters the history of Romanian chess after obtaining the highest distinction in world chess.

Still at a young age, David Gavrilescu managed to capture the public’s attention through his track record. The young chess player is a double national champion in rapid chess and occupies the 4th position in the ranking of Romania in classical chess.

A month ago, David participated in the Superbet Rapid&Blitz tournament, where he defeated Indian grandmaster Vishy Adnan.

In addition to the brilliant career he is building in the world of chess, the young grandmaster is also concerned with academic life. David is a 2nd year student at the Academy of Economic Studies, majoring in International Economic Relations and one of the core players of the ASE University Sports Club, one of the largest chess clubs in Romania.

Age did not prevent David from becoming a player of the Romanian national team. Together with his coach, Constantin Lupulescu, David represents Romania at major international chess competitions.

A year ago, the Superbet Foundation sent David to the coaching team of grandmaster Gary Kasparov. Currently, David is one of the best-rated Romanian chess players, and his talent can pave a glorious path for him in world chess.

We are happy to be with him and keep our fingers crossed for him in future competitions.

Interview with Olena Skvortsova – national champion in single and K2 kayak

The political conflict across the border has dealt a heavy blow to all sports branches in Ukraine. The national team of Kayak Canoe had to abandon the sports base in Odessa and join the Romanian national team at the Nicolae Navasart Sports Complex.

It was a quick change for everyone, but fate gave us the opportunity to meet Olena. Olena is a fighter and despite the difficult situation she is in, she has not let her guard down for a second and continues to fight for her desires.

Her ambition particularly attracted our attention, and during one of our visits to the Nicolae Navasart Sports Complex, Olena agreed to give us an interview to get to know her better.

  • When did you start your sports career?

“I started this sport in 2010. So far I have 12 years of experience.”

  • What made you choose sports?

“When I was at school, I had a very close friend who practiced kayaking. One day he took me with him and I liked it very much. I fell in love with the complexity of this sport, the fact that it is practiced in nature and I can always enjoy the sun. In the winter, the preparation is a little more difficult, and this is where the affinity towards the complexity of the sport comes in.”

  • What is the most important title you have achieved during your career?

“The most important title was the 5th place at the European K2 Championship at 1000m. This championship was held in Bulgaria and I can say that it was a unique experience. I am also the champion of Ukraine in single kayak and K2.”

  • Can you tell us the story that led you to train with the Romanian team?

“It was an unforeseen situation. During that period, we were away with the Ukrainian team in a camp in Turkey. During our trip, the war started in the country, at which point the International Federation contacted us. Mrs. Cristina Manicea agreed to join the Romanian kayak-canoe team and that’s how we got here. Despite the circumstances, I felt very good here and decided to stay to compete in the Romanian team.”

  • To what extent did the political situation in the country influence your sports performance?

“I am very sorry for the political situation in the country. The national team of Ukraine is my soul and it was very difficult for me to leave everything behind, home, family friends. It is very difficult for me to train without those close to me, but here at Snagov I found a second family and I managed to adapt”

  • What are your plans for the next period?

“I am very interested in the Munich championship held at the end of August. It’s a very important goal for me and I want a medal.”

  • What title/award do you want most?

“I want the most important title for any athlete, to become a gold medalist at the Olympics. The next Olympics will be held in 2024 in Paris. I train a lot for this competition and I really want to participate. I believe that work will lead me to the fulfillment of this dream.”

  • What would you like to pass on to your teammates?

“I know they are training now with bullets behind them. I wish them all to be healthy and safe from any danger. I really wish for them to be able to achieve their goals and fulfill all their dreams”

As her every message suggests, Olena is a fighter no matter the challenge. It was a joy for us to have her by our side and we would like to see her one day competing for the Romanian national team.

We wish him the best of luck for future competitions and a dream participation in the 2024 Olympics.

Superbet Foundation sponsors the ‘Maria’ International Wheelchair Basketball Tournament!

The Superbet Foundation becomes one of the sponsors of the “Maria” International Wheelchair Basketball Tournament. With a history of almost two decades in Romanian sport, wheelchair basketball has gained notoriety among patients with locomotor problems. For many of them, basketball is the best form of therapy and a reason to maintain a balanced lifestyle.

The dream of those from ASP Oradea was to establish wheelchair basketball in Romania. Their adventure began in 2005, when the association’s team participated for the first time in an international competition in Bosnia.

Lacking material possibilities, ASP Oradea became the first team from Romania participating in such a tournament. Without even having equipment or carts for the team’s players, ASP Oradea made its presence in a tournament with 6 teams, playing as equals against teams with an extensive history behind them.

18 years have passed since then, and ASP Oradea managed to stand out in several international competitions and continue organizing the only international wheelchair basketball tournament in Romania.

This year, the 18th edition of the “Maria” International Wheelchair Basketball Tournament will take place between August 26-28 in Oradea. There will be 6 participating teams ready to demonstrate the importance of adapted sport in Romania.

Their dream must continue, and the involvement of the Superbet Foundation represents a step forward for the continuation of a beautiful tradition of Romanian sport.

Although he has only been training for a year, Liviu has already won his first prize in an official competition and is setting big goals for the next season.

His enthusiasm and discovered passion for climbing caught the attention of both us and our teammates. With a smile on his face, Matei agreed to give us more details about his passions and desires in an interview.

  •  What made you enter the world of paraclimbing and when did you start?

“I got in touch with the world of paraclimbing a year ago. Claudiu Miu invited me to the Climb Again hall and I found it fascinating. It was something new for me, I liked it very much and I adapted quickly. I felt like I was in a little family, and the moment I experienced more routes gave me enormous satisfaction.”

  • To what extent has this sport changed your life?

“It changed my life quite a lot. I live much healthier since I took up sports. Climbing opened my appetite for sports and I started doing more activities. I wish we had more peers and more people with disabilities developed a passion for climbing.”

  • How was the beginning period for you? Was the training difficult?

“The beginning period was not difficult for me. I’ve done sports in the past, but I went through a long hiatus before taking up rock climbing. During this period I learned a lot from new people. It was therapeutic for me to be able to hang out with people who can teach me beneficial things.”

  • How much do you currently train?

“I train quite a lot. I currently have 3-4 workouts per week. The nice part is that they differ from day to day. For example, today I can train for bouldering, tomorrow for climbing. When we are with the whole team, we go to the mountains and train on the rocks. The other day I climbed the Via Ferrata, an extraordinary route.”

  • What was the most intense competition for you?

“I had the most intense competition in Moscow last year. It was my first participation in a World Championship. I went there with only two months of training, not being used to the idea of competition. I found the experience difficult, but I’m glad I got through it.”

  • What are your goals?

“When I want something, I work for that thing and do my best to get it. I would like to develop this sport, to give more people with disabilities the opportunity to discover its beauty.”

  • What do you think is the key to success in sports?

“The key to success is to train frequently and always take care of your life. You always have to be analytical and learn from other people’s mistakes.”

  • If you could send one message to all people, what would you say?

“Take up sports! It is very important to have a healthy life. In addition to this aspect, sport educates and frees us from negative thoughts. The Climb Again family also helped me a lot socially. Sports and people always help you forget about your problems.”

Liviu Matei has big plans in terms of popularizing sports for people with disabilities.

His wishes are also our wishes and we want to do everything we can to give people with disabilities the chance to rediscover themselves through sports.

Interview with Valentina Necoară – pole vault champion and athlete enrolled in the Go Scholarship program!

Valentina Necoară, one of the athletes enrolled in the Go Scholarship program, won the silver medal at the U20 Balkan Championship.

Long training sessions and the desire to win led Valentina to add another medal to her record. The Balkan U20 Championship was an obscurity of proportions for the Romanian athlete.

In the pole vault event, Valentina Necoară managed to overcome the 3.8m threshold, ranking second on the podium.

Work and dedication are the paving stones of a successful sports career, and by the age of 16, Valentina managed to set the national record twice (3.4m and 3.5m) for the U16 age category.

The young athlete continues to surprise with her performances, and her passion for athletics can lead her to restore the national pole vault record set by Gabriela Mihalcea 23 years ago.

The last challenge of this competitive season will be the Romanian Cup held next weekend. We keep our fingers crossed for the athlete for another success completed by a gold medal.

Valentina Necoară is a young sportswoman whose ambition, dedication and love for sport define her completely. The Go Scholarship was a surprise and an innovation for the first 30 athletes selected and evaluated for this program.

To find out more details about what Go Scholarship means, Valentina offered to share with us her experiences and tell us how this program influenced her life.

  • How did you feel when you were chosen to participate in the Go Scholarship program?

“At first I didn’t know what to expect. The idea of working with so many specialists sounded incredible and we were very excited to get started.”

  • On what level did participating in the Go Scholarship program help you the most?

“Certainly, the program helped me in all ways. For me, this competitive season was full of ups and downs, but the ideas offered by Cristi Olteanu, our psychotherapist, were extremely valuable.”

  • What do you like most about the trainings/workshops you do?

“At the workshops, I really like that we don’t focus only on sports. Thus, we learn useful information for everyday life, as happened last week with the first aid workshop. When it comes to training, I really like Dimi and Erwah’s energy. I really like that we focus on the question “why?” behind every move. We are always learning about our bodies and how we should move. “

  • Which of the specialists in the program did you interact with the most and what did you learn from that interaction?

“Thanks to the fact that we see each other almost weekly, Cristi Olteanu is the one I interact with the most. It taught me how to ask myself questions, how to look at things from a different perspective, how to be in a state of continuous presence, and many other insights.”

  • What does participating in the Go Scholarship program mean to you?

“Participating in the program is an honor for me. I have the honor of working with so many specialists who share with us essential information that is the basis of performance sports. Also, my participation in the program is a confirmation that I am on the right track, having other top athletes from different disciplines as my colleagues. “

  • What are the next contests/competitions you will participate in?

“This season I have only two more competitions, the U20 Balkaniad in Turkey, this weekend, and the Romanian Cup, which will take place on July 23-24.”

  • What goal have you set for yourself for the next 5 years?

“From a sporting point of view, I would like to qualify for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 and be present on the podiums of the most important international competitions. In everyday life, my object is to be happy. “

  • What title/award do you want most?

“I think that any athlete, especially those who practice an individual sport, want an Olympic medal and I think that I also long for such a prize, maybe even a gold one. “

Gold at the Olympics and a happy life are the biggest wishes for Valentina Necoară. The work she puts in at every practice and the support provided by the Go Scholarship program will help her achieve both of her goals. We wish her success in this season’s competitions and we want to see her on the podiums of the big competitions in the next 6 years.

Interview with Andrei Frusinoiu – representative of the Romanian Kayak-Canoe Federation

The cross-border conflagration had a major impact on all sporting disciplines in Ukraine. Andrei Frusinoiu, representative of the Romanian Kayak-Canoe Federation, chose to explain in detail in an interview the situation of the Ukrainian kayak-canoe team and what impact the involvement of the Superbet Foundation had in hosting athletes from across the border.

  • How many athletes are now supported by the Superbet Foundation?

“Until June 4, we hosted 54 people from the national team of Ukraine. Many of the athletes came accompanied by their families and we were glad to be able to help them all. Currently, we have 8 athletes in the Nicolae Navasart National Sports Complex and their coach.”

  • What is the training schedule of the athletes?

“Ukrainian athletes have a personal trainer. We have a Ukrainian-speaking coach on the team staff. Training is done twice a day. We have the first training from 9:30 to 12:00 and the evening training from 15:30 to 18:00. We provide athletes with 3 meals a day, accommodation and everything they need for professional development. Arriving at our sports base, we offered them new kayaks with the help of the Romanian Kayak-Canoe Federation.”

  • How was the first contact with them?

“The request to receive the Ukrainian athletes came from the International Kayak-Canoe Federation. Later, we organized a social center inside the Nicolae Navasart National Sports Complex, the federation being the support entity in this endeavor. The problem started with the food funds. The state leadership offered us a support of 20 lei per athlete, and we made every effort to offer the Ukrainian athletes a menu similar to that of the Romanian athletes. We managed to overcome this problem with the financial involvement of the Superbet Foundation.”

  • Do you find it difficult to collaborate with athletes from across the border?

“No, it’s not difficult, the only problem was the language barrier, but we solved it with our colleague Nichita Şerban, one of the coaches from the team. He is always with them and makes communication easier.”

  • Do you think that the political situation affects them professionally?

“It’s clear that it affects them very much. I spoke to their coaches, they were all very thoughtful. Every day they received bad news related to the situation at home. Being a state of war, they were first notified that their budget had been cut. Later, they received the news that their salaries could no longer be paid and that they had to return to the country to participate in the war. A Ukrainian coach was showing me a video of a rocket landing a few tens of meters from his house. It is clear that these dramas are reflected in their performances.”

  • What competitions do Ukrainian athletes train for?

“A large part of them participated in the World Cup in June. In addition to this event, they had two other competitions that they participated in. I was first in Poland, then in the Czech Republic. They got medals there too. Those who stayed with us are training for future competitions. “

  • Is it possible to nationalize them and select them for the national team?

“The 8 athletes who stayed with us want to be naturalized. They expressed their desire to stay with our national team. They thought it would be better for them to compete for the Romanian team. If we succeed in naturalizing them, we will send them all to sports clubs to be financially supported by them. For now, this possibility does not exist because they are foreign citizens and the Romanian clubs belong to the state.”

  • What message would you send to other Ukrainian athletes?

“I wish them success in everything they propose. I would like this conflict across the border to end as soon as possible and for everyone to return to their families. I also wish them to pursue their passions because sport always brings people together.”

Andrei Frusinoiu sees the future of Ukrainian athletes with good eyes. With the necessary support, the Ukrainian athletes hosted by the Nicolae Navasart National Sports Complex will also be able to perform for the Romanian team at international competitions.
