Super results and a memorable opening ceremony for day 4 of the competition!

Joy, smiles and excitement were on hand for the children in the GO Scholarship and Step by Step partner programs.

Most of them had the opportunity to meet Grandmaster Garry Kasparov for the first time in a Q&A session organized as part of the Grand Chess Tour.

The little ones came armed with plenty of questions for the greatest champion in the history of the mind sport.

Always smiling, Garry Kasparov shared with the youngsters some of his experience as an athlete, but also some of the secrets that helped him become the greatest chess player of all time.

Absorbed by the stories of the American grandmaster, the children were treated to a memorable experience and an autograph from Garry at the opening of round 4 of the Bucharest stage.

After the beautiful gathering, chess fans everywhere were treated to an exceptional chess show by the 10 magicians.

Fabiano Caruana took the lead in the standings after an unexpected victory over Grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi. Fabiano currently sits at the top of the rankings, half a point behind Richard Rapport and Wesley So.

The second surprise of the evening came from French chess player Alireza Firouzja. Unfortunately for Bogdan Deac’s supporters, Alireza managed to beat him with a clear victory.

After two draws and a defeat, Alireza Firouzja comes back strong with a win, placing him in 7th place, tied on points with Ding Liren, Giri Anish and Ian Nepomniachtchi.

Chess fans everywhere enjoyed a great chess show, and today’s point win propelled Fabiano Caruana into the top spots, tied on points with Ian Nepomniachtchi, Richard Rapport, and Wesley So.

Two important victories on the second day of the stage in Bucharest!

Day two of the Bucharest stage surprised chess fans everywhere with two wins in the most anticipated matches of the round.

Romania’s representative Richard Rapport scored a win over Polish grandmaster Jan Krzysztof Duda in the longest match of the day.

After his draw with Rapport in the first round, Ian Nepomniachtchi gained a significant lead in the rankings with a win over our countryman Bogdan Deac. The Romanian player played defensively until the last move, but Nepo’s experience made the difference in this match.

The first day of the Bucharest leg of the Grand Chess Tour 2023 was full of excitement for the 10 fantastic chess players.

The 5 matches played today were a delight for chess fans everywhere. The show was in abundance and the close competition led the matches to one win and 4 draws.

The Grand Chess Tour has announced the wildcards for the European stages

The long awaited news by chess enthusiasts around the world has arrived. The Grand Chess Tour has announced the wildcards for the European stages of this year’s tournament. 

As we are used to, the tournament will start with the Bucharest stage (4-16 May) where we will have the best Romanian chess player of the moment, Bogdan Deac, invited to play on a wildcard basis alongside top players of the world ranking. 

The competition in Warsaw will be full of surprises for the Polish public. Grand champion Magnus Carlsen has accepted our invitation again this year and will play in the Polish and Croatian stages. Radoslaw Wojtaszek, Bogdan Deac and Kirill Shevchenko have been invited to join the world number one. 

The Romanian chess player and Kirill Shevchenko will play under the Romanian flag, while grandmaster Radoslaw Wojtaszek will represent Poland “at home”. 

The Zagreb round of this year’s tournament brings the most surprises in terms of wildcard invitations. The Croatian public will have the pleasure to see Magnus Carlsen, Vishy Anand, D.Gukesh, Ivan Saric and Constantin Lupulescu as wildcard guests in the same competition. 

By far, the Grand Chess Tour 2023 has the best line-up in the history of the competition. The world’s best chess players will compete for a prize pool of $350,000 for the classic chess competitions and $175,000 for the rapid and blitz chess competitions.
